Hi Lorna. I went dress shopping in Edinburgh and here are my experiences.

Kavelle - Gorgie road, beautiful dresses but samples were discoloured and grubby.

Emma Roy - lovely dresses but they only let me try on 4, 2 of which were hideous. Found one I liked but they were so pushy it really put me off. The woman snapped at me for asking what the dress was called. It might just be that one sales woman.

Thistledown, Haymarket. Used to work near there and the dresses in the window were all gorgeous. Didn't make it there but I've heard good things.

If you can get to outside Edinburgh:
Katherine Hamilton, west calder. Gorgeous dresses and cheaper than Edinburgh.

Gwennes, Broxburn - where I actually got my dress following recommendations from 4 different people. Lovely range of dresses, not shy to point out the sale rack and try different cuts and colours. Actually made it a good experience.

Anne and bobbies, bathgate - had an appointment but cancelled after hearing bad reviews from 2 brides, 1 of whom didn't get her dress at all.

  • I went dress shopping for a friend in Edinburgh. Thistledown was a lovely shop the ladies were really nice. We also went to Butterflies (think it is in Haymarket?) and it was also fantastic and she ended up getting her dress from there.

    Happy shopping :)

    xx

I agree with the previous recommendations for Thistledown - though be careful as the shop currently has a big to let sign in the window, so find out what would happen if they move!

Susan Gregory - had a lot of really well priced dresses, and helpful staff but unfortunately nothing I liked.

Kavelle - rude staff and really expensive

Emma Roy - I had a really good experience here - was able to try on lots of dresses, and had 2 members of staff helping me. They had the dress, but was more expensive than where I ended up buying from.

I had a really bad experience with Gwennes in Broxburn, after they let me try on a plus size dress, that I then fell in love with before discovering they hadn't said there was no possibility of getting it in my size!

I ended up buying mine from Anne & Bobbies in Bathgate - and I thought they were brilliant, really helpful and got a much better price than the same dress in Emma Roy.

Emma Roy had a major sale on last week, not sure how long it lasts though. There are a couple of shops round that area (beside the St. James Centre)

I bought my dress in thistledown at haymarket, however, I had an appointment at Caroline Castigliano as my first ever appointment and they made me try on lots of different styles and eventually helped me decide what the right style for me was. It was a lovely day.

La Novia in Stockbridge has some stunning dresses.

Emma Roy is great and has lots of choice.

Pretty Woman on London Road is also quite good.
