emigrating to the USA or Australia

My husband and i have no money to send us abroad but i hate living here, always have done. He is a panel beater, has been for the last 24 yrs and is a very good panel beater but says he is "ok" he just wont admit how good he is and wont go for better jobs, so hes had 3 jobs in 24 yrs, the longest being 14 yrs....Iwant us to move to the US or Australia but cant afford to just go unless he is sponsored, but he wont budge, says hes just borderline and that he doesnt want to run the risk...he currently works for Mercedes and in the past 7 yrs not one of his repairs has been returned....why wont he budge, i know hes comfortable, but he is so clever in his job!! i dont know what to do, all he ever says is i can do whatever i want, charming!! (we've been married 8 yrs, together 10 yrs)

Why do you think life will be better in the US? With all respect, visa issues aside you don't really think someone is going to sponsor you to relocate when there are plenty of their own citizens that could do the same job?

Edit: I recall your son has a disability - you do realise that you will not qualify for disability benefits if you move overseas?
    Gone ... or have I?
  • I lived abroad for 2 years. Whatever problems you have here you will take them with you or you will find different ones.

Just because the sun is shining doesn't make life any easier. It's best to deal with the problems you have here than leave and take them with you.
Wow, I got 3 *, when did that happen :j:T:p

I am not so sure the problem is with life in the UK.

Its unlikely you would get a visa for the US though Aus might just be possible.

Have a read of the Britishexpats forum for further guidance.

I am not particularly enamoured with life in the UK either but often, the problems lie within but we seek to put the blame elsewhere.

The grass always appears greener but isnt.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

I agree with the two above posters. A few years ago I was in a job I hated and whenever I had a bad day, my reaction was always 'I want to get out of this country'. It wasn't anything to do with this country, I just wanted to escape. I ended up going to Australia for nine months, and whilst it was a great experience, until you've spent some time away from home you can't appreciate how difficult it is to adjust to a new country, not knowing anybody. Plus, as the above posters have said, you just take all your problems with you.

If you are serious about moving, you need to actually visit the places you are thinking of moving to. You might not even like them. I didn't dislike Australia, but didn't exactly love it either.

Depending on what you do, you might be lucky and get enough points for a move to Australia.

You wouldn't have a chance moving to the USA though.

If you don't have any money, that won't help either, you need to be able to support yourself over there for the first few months, even if you have a job lined up.

I've spent most of my working life overseas (eleven years in New Zealand, two years in Australia, four years in Thailand). I've been back in the UK for two years, but will be heading overseas again in two weeks to take up a promotion in HK.

Best thing I ever did, but the OP needs to understand that it will be impossible to get a visa for either the US or Australia, based on the information she has told us.

I'm not sure what she is asking us - to be honest, the issue seems a marital one, not a working or financial one.

You stand a good chance of getting into Australia, if you're both under 44. You don't need a sponsor. However, if your son is disabled, as someone else suggested, that would put considerable doubt on your application, depending on his needs.

Regardless - and I hate to rain on your parade - Australian 'sponsors' don't pay for you to go! They simply speed up the application (2 years wait for an independent migration and around 5 months for an employer-sponsored one). You have to pay visa fees (approx £1700 each), pay for medicals, around £4000 for transportation of belongings, and flights on top. I strongly doubt an employer would pay that for you, not for a panel-beating position. If he was a highly trained specialist in demand by a specific company, you might get a contribution, but 'sponsor' doesn't equal 'paid for', I'm afraid.

Cost of living in Aus is high compared to the UK, esp for food and clothes. Housing is about the same if you're in a city.

Sounds to me like you're unhappy, and his response puts more of a question around your marriage and your ability to talk to each other about this stuff. As others have said, you need to sort that out first rather than going off to somewhere where the grass really isn't necessarily greener.

    :)

Don't you mean emigrate from the UK, if you immigrate to USA/Australia?

It may not have been grammatically correct, but we all know what the OP meant, and it didn't change the content of the post or the responses.
