in Cutting tax
Hello,
I have just got a letter from the tax office referring to the previous tax year requesting for more information about working for a company I have never heard of and definitely never worked for! Googled the company and it's in glasgow (i'm in essex!) and it's registered to a house. Looked on companies house and it has no turnover either. Is this identity theft? Really worried about what it is and obviously can't call the tax office until Monday!
Any help would be massively appreciated!
Thanks
Katie

Probably more likely the other company has accidentally used your National Insurance number so one of their employees has had their earnings/tax/nic wrongly allocated to your taxpayer account instead of theirs. A very easy and common mistake to make, i.e. instead of AB123456A, they may have put someone else's number in the payroll system, such as AB123455A.
HMRC call centres do work Saturdays, so you should be able to phone today and hope to get some reassurance at least. Also, whether or not you get any joy on the phone, also write back telling them that you don't work there, have never worked there, etc., so if the person on the phone can't/won't update your records, you at least have a letter in the system to get things sorted.0
