Question for the dental people among us.

I'm hoping someone with dental knowledge can answer my query.
I have been to the dentist again today, and he has decided to do a root canal filling in the process of having a crown fitted.
Obviously i'm laid there mouth wide open eyes shut and just letting him get on with it.
Well my question is.....
Why did he need to use a bunsen burner to warm up one of the implements to then put into my tooth. I'm just intrigued as to what was being done.
Oh an just to add for someone who is so i thought completely petrified of the dentist, i didn't have a problem with the whole experience today, in fact i quite enjoyed it!
I think that may be because i know at the end of the treatment my tooth will be fixed and better.

It's because the root filling material is made of a rubber type material (gutta percha) and the hot instrument chops it off at the end of the root canal inside your tooth. I use an ultrasonic scaler with the water turned off and I bet Welshdent has omething a bit more Gucci! Each to their own though.0
