You are quite correct, I managed to find some old punk music that I've not seen in any of the mainstream online stores but they didn't even have rock music (and, as you say, not a chart album in sight), or nobody that I had ever heard of. I only had 30 free downloads and I struggled to find enough stuff to download to use them all.
