Although I haven't tried this recipe, I have cooked a lot of other things from this book and they have all turned out as expected. It is from my mother in laws Good Housekeeping Cookery Compendium printed 1959. It has all recipes for everything you see ready made now.
Cream Crackers
8oz SR flour
1tsp salt
2oz butter
Cold Water
Sieve flour and salt, rub in fat thoroughly, then mix to pliable paste with water.turn out dough on floured board and knead lightly for a few minutes. Roll out thinly into an oblong, mark out in thirds and bring down top third and bring up top third, seal the edges and give the pastry a half turn to the left. Repeat the rolling and folding twice. Finally roll out the pastry thinly and evenly, trim the edges and cut into 3 inch squares. Put on a greased tray, Stab with a fork well ( the recipe uses a word not allowed on here) and bake in a moderate oven ( 350 f ) for about 20 minutes until golden brown on both sides.
Hope this helps, I have found that the oven temperature may need to be a bit lower in a fan assisted oven. But as in all home made cooking it is a bit trial and error depending on individual ovens.0 -
Doh, now why didn't I think to check my GH book? It's about the same age as yours.
So, it's like making puff pastry, but with less fat. Makes sense.
Thanks!0 -
Hmmm considering my DS LIVES on cream crackers (thanks Wallace and Gromit and the Grand Day Out
) although considering I can buy a large packet for 37p I am not sure I could make them any cheaper. But would be fun to have a go just for the sake of it mind
I assume the word you can't use is p r i c k? LOLI have a gift for enraging people, but if I ever bore you it'll be with a knife

Thanks very much. I love cream crackers and find they are my quick snack but really would like to make them rather than buy them. Will give it a bash at the weekend.0

I think if they turn out well they will taste much better straight out the oven than ready made ones. My teenage daughter frequently comes home from school and bakes a few cakes.
Yes that was the word lol .I didn't know that i could spell it with spaces.0
