in Cutting tax
hi my mum retired last year and once she reached 60 she continued to work for a little while while receiving state pension
her taxcode changed and was taxed under paye through her employer at the time when she left hmrc claimed she had had the wrong code and that she now owes them money they say she should have been aware of the underpayments but why would she ? she isnt a tax expert
they are saying she has to re-pay it but she is on a limited fixed income and only receives a state pension and pension credit she also gets help with rent and her council tax due to low income there isn't the money to repay she has explained this to hmrc but they still say she has to pay it back.
can we get this written off?
Any help gratefully received

It will not be written off no .... and also the IR stance on tax is that anyone who earns an income knows that they may need to pay tax on it. So there is no way to say that she would not know that it should have been taxed I am affraid.
If you give us some more details ie her tax code and how much she earnt from her employment and pension we might be able to help.0 -
Taxhelp for Older People (TOP http://www.taxvol.org.uk/) may be able to help your mum.Did you really mean to put loose?
Lose: no longer possess, not to retain, unable to find
Loose: not firmly or tightly fixed in place0 -
are you sure she owes the money
if you want to post up the details we could check them0 -

No im not sure does cause they claimed it was a lot more and when we queried it they changed the figure so seems to me they dont really no what they are doing. i will try and get the details and post them up .
In response to the op she was paying tax on the income just hmrc claim it was enough .
Does anyone no why some cases have been written off what would be the reason ?0 -
Usually they won't write it off.
It sounds like she might need more support to deal with this than just through this forum.
She should be able to get help by contacting Tax Help for Older People on 0845 601 3321. It's run by volunteers and provides tax help and advice to older people on low incomes.0
