Loan...unlikely?

Hi, I currently dont work, i recieve benefits as my son is severely disabled and right now it is just not possible for me to work.

My old car has given up the ghost, im now left with no transport as my son is unable to travel on any kind of public transport. I live in a village that has one shop and thats it, i dont have any family or friends nearby here either :(

I'm unable to afford to buy a car, I am in the appeals process for DLA mobility but so far this has been ongoing for 13 months, and no sign of this going through any time soon so a mobility car is out of the question for now.

I could really do with getting a loan of around £1500 - £2000 to enable me to get a car that will be more reliable than my really cheap car that has just died, and enable me to fit my sons special needs buggy in the back.

I dont have great credit history due to problems with my ex paying back his part (that we agreed privately) of loans we took out years ago when together.

So, do i have any hope of getting a loan? My mum has said she would be guarantor, but she doesnt own a house, but does own and live on a houseboat, but she is also on benefits as she only has 5% vision.

I would appreciate any help/advice.
Thankyou.

Its not going to happen I am afraid.

When you say your current car has given up the ghost - what exactly has happened?
  • The head gasket has gone and also damage to the engine, been told it needs a whole new engine.

Are you able to get a car through Motability?

Edit Just noticed that OP has stated DLA not finalised.

How much would it cost to fix the car you already have?

  • I sympathise with you as in the past, I've been in the same situation as you are now. What kind of car have you got? If its a run of the mill type - Ford, Vauxhall, etc, try a local scrapyard for an engine out of a wreck. These can be had for £100/£200 for many cars, with about another £100 for fitting. This may give you another year or so of service.

Explain to them the situation - not all scrappies are out for every penny they can screw out of you, and if you honest with them, they MAY just come up with a better deal.

If all else fails, why not try your local newspaper or local radio station? A little bit of publicity for a good cause often results in an offer. You never know - someone may just have an old car on the drive they don't need anymore with a few months MOT still on it that they wouldn't mind giving away.

Good luck, and hope this helps.

  • Its a volvo, the garage has given a quote of 1200, they have been great and tried to get hold of one second hand by phoning every contact they know, but nobody has one :/
  • What model? 740, 850, 345? That price is very over the top. get on the phone and see what others quote you. Try a mobile mechanic. I had one four years ago to do my head gasket which cost £400 and that included the cost of a new head on a Rover 200.
