I have a joint mortgage with my husband (17 years to go on the mortgage). I have a suspicion that he has done one of the following:
1. Secured a loan using our home as security
2. Acted as guarantor for a debt for his brother, again using our home as security.
As the house is mortaged and not owned outright, and as we are joint lenders (with joint liability), would my husband be able to do either of the above without my knowledge, permission or signature?
If he can OR if he has lied and claimed to be sole name on mortgage, would our mortgage lender have to be notified if the house was being used as a security or guarantee?

You can download a copy of your house deeds from Land Registry for £4 to see if any charges have been added.
https://www.landregistry.gov.uk/wps/portal/Property_SearchRENTING? Have you checked to see that your landlord has permission from their mortgage lender to rent the property? If not, you could be thrown out with very little notice.

I imagine it's not supposed to happen without your consent and signature - however, this did happen years a go to a friend which she found out about when they got divorced. Husband had taken out a secured loan on the property (joint mortgage, both names on deeds) with his name and signature, no attempt to get her consent. A sharply worded letter to the lender stopped them chasing her for the debt, but she had, of course, already lost out on the amount of equity she might have otherwise been entitled to get.
So you do need to find out if anything has gone on without your consent.0
