With all the news on students not getting the right skills for jobs etc, what does the panel think should make up the core educational requirement that would put our children on the right path to job success?

I'd say:

English: Especially spelling!
Maths: but everyday maths, not those bizzare things you'll never come across - just addition/subtraction, that sort!
Finance: Basic finance, APR, rates, how mortgages work, best rate loans etc..
World Awareness: Different cultures etc - a mix of geography and history maybe?
PE: Real games, where people actually sweat?
IT: General IT stuff, web use etc..

add to this..!

How would engineers cope without "bizarre" maths.

"Bizarre" maths is central to engineering, building, sciences, economics, computing.

The problem with school is that you don't realise what an opportunity that this time presented until it has gone.

Perhaps schools could benefit from a confidential survey of the likes and dislikes of their pupils.

Use the existing library system whilst it still exists.

I appreciate that's it probably a joke but please correct the spelling of mortgage.
  • It's not the subjects themselves, it's the too rigid curriculum, the spoon fed way they are taught, and the examination system that rewards this.

We teach our young people to wait until somebody gives them the answers, and crush their initiative.

Well, and the fact that academic standards have been watered down a lot over the last 40 years.

This seems an appropriate primary school syllabus, yes. If you want to be on the road to "success" then you're going to need a little bit more than this.

Bizarre maths, as you term it, is one of the few subjects at school where you have to actually understand concepts and apply them to situations, instead of just learning facts about hill sheep farming or whatever.

Depends what kind of success you want. Judging by those subjects, "success" is a junior role in some kind of non-technical commercial enterprise.

I would much prefer to learn bizarre maths, as I quite enjoyed maths, and it has kinda helped the old career.

Mortgages/APR and finance etc, can easily be understood without being part of the curriculum

best loan rates might be a little pointless

We have recently had to choose my sons options for taking next year. All the apprenticeship's that were on offer have been scrapped, apparently not enough funding for them to go ahead. This seems outrageous especially as Cameron was pledging more money not so long ago for MORE appreticeship places.
