Work lost copies of my birth cert ect
[Deleted User]

I work in the finance industry and before commencing work I had to take in my long birth certificate, drivers licence and 2 proofs of address. This was to prove my entitlement to work in UK and for a CRB check. Yesterday I got an email from HR saying that they needed to photocopy my passport. I stated that I did not have a passport and that I had already bought birth certificate ect in which were photocopied before I started. They just said sorry and asked me to bring them in again. If it turns out as I suspect, that they have lost the copies of my ID, what should I do?

Talk to them sternly? Because there really isn't much more that you can do. It's highly irresponsible of them, they shouldn't loose such things, and it is a breach of data protection - but since there really isn't anything much that will happen as a result of complaining, then it really isn't worth your energy or time trying to make something of this.0

Ask them to cover the cost of replacements?0

Ummmm . should we ask why you have chosen to call yourself suicidebob?0

Not sure how that's relevant to the issue at hand.
It refers to some songs / bands I like (Manics / Hanoi Rocks), my email address is suicide related, although I in no way have suicidal tendencies. I find the 'bob' part to be a nice contrast.0 -

You can report them to the Data Protection Registrar who has the ability to issue fines in the £10,000's.0 -
My employer did the same thing - rang me to say they hadn't had copies. I wasn't going to be passing for a couple of weeks, so couldn't drop new ones in, so I reiterated that they had had them and asked them to check again please. They rang back 5 minutes later to tell me they had found them. I'd ask them to check again, and maybe mention Data Protection if they get stroppy....0

Take them in again. There isn't much point causing a storm that the copies have been mislaid really as far as I can see.
I'm assuming you got the originals back the first time? If you didn't and they lost the originals I believe you should be able to ask them to cover the cost of replacements.0 -

You could. But they won't be.
And meanwhile - since you needed all this to start work, you haven't worked there for a year, so you will probably find that you don't work there any more.
A simple infringement like this (assuming it is - they could have actually shredded them and not lost them, because you haven't asked them yet!) would get, at absolute worst, a slap on the wrists. There would be no fine. But the employer would know who reported them! Great long term career planning!0 -

Such an email address would not look too good for contact details on a CV though

Who says he uses that email for CVs etc and why is it any of your business? Honestly, stick to the point of the thread.0
