ACER not validating warranties?

Hello all... Long time reader first time poster
I've had my ACER laptop now for just a little over a year. I've upgraded it and had the power supply die on me so I had to replace that...
Anyway, it recently started switching itself off, annoying as it wouldn't give any warning, it'd just die. I'd lose all my work etc...
That problem got worse till the laptop will no longer turn on!
I expect the power button/switch to be dead, but I'm not sure.
I contacted ACER 15 days after my 12 month warranty had ran out, they sent me the same email time and time again (it seems I was past from one call center worker to another) they all requested the same information, even though I'd already given it below in previous emails (laptop make, serial number etc).
Anyway, this exchange continued till last night (they answer emails at 9pm for some reason?!) they said that as my laptop was out of warranty they wouldn't fix it for free and instead would charge me £35+ vat to look at it, then charge me for the repair, then minus £35 from that charge.
They didn't give me any idea how much it may cost!
I've emailed them back asking why they dragged this out for so long! (I suspect to make the warranty seem even longer out of date!)
I doubt there is much I can do... but I'd like to know what you all think!
Thanks,
Mark

Sale of Goods Act (SoGA) protects you up to 6 years,(forget the warranty period, it is in addition to your Stautory Rights and cannot take them away).
Did you pay by credit card? as they will be as liable as the retailer.
Goods should be of mercahntable quality, fit for purpose and as described.
Go back and kick up a fuss.
Go to THIS PAGE put ACER into the "company name box" and it will give you geographical numbers so you are not paying the rip off 0870 costsDon`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
Hi,. did you perform the upgrades yourself or was it by a qualified engineer?
If yourself you voided your warrenty anyhows.0 -

Warranty is over anyway,(didn't mean much either), goods should be of merchantable quality,(SoGA outweighs warranties as it is statutory rights, unlike warranties), however if OP has upgraded themselves and messed up then they may not have any come back.Don`t steal - the Government doesn`t like the competition0 -
Upgrades (RAM) shouldn't effect any warranty. Its not like it was a motherboard replacement or anything!
As it was only a few days out of warranty they should really fix the laptop! I'm sure its just the micro switch!0 -
Sales of Goods Act gives you up to 6 years (or 5 in scotland) - the actual length is based on what is deemed a reasonable lifespan which is basically something the courts will decide over time though I would say it is fairly safe to assume that a laptop should last longer than 12 months and 15 days.
User repairs/ upgrades would naturally invalidate this if it can be demonstrated that the new fault is directly related to the users modifications. From what you say it is unlikely that this is the case unless you didnt buy the identical power pack for it.All posts made are simply my own opinions and are neither professional advice nor the opinions of my employers
