Apparently there's something called a "university" and you do these things called "degrees" that last 3 or 4 years.

True, but that is three or four "lost" years as far a buying a house goes.

Very true, but we need said qualifications (or similar) to get enough income to buy said homes. You can't buy a house with any old job these days remember.

Mate of mines son has just bought his first house at 23. He is a builder and had no help from his parents or any qualifications to speak of. Hard worker though.

And that's how you do it.

By all means hardwork can work out just great, my point is you need to work very hard in one way or another to get the income to buy a house. Part time checkout operators can't afford houses like the generation before.

If me and my better half where doing the jobs my parents where when they bought a house we wouldn't be able buy a house now.

By all means due a healthy mix or hardwork/qualifications I will be fine and will be skipping the typical FTB houses and going a little bigger, just because I am fine it doesn't mean I can't see how its harder for the rest of my generation.

You’re at it again when have part time check operators ever been able to buy a house. I would agree that the need for a university education to get jobs you could go into with O levels 30 years ago along with the lack of apprenticeships etc doesn’t help and causes people to buy later.

I get the impression that there is a certain amount of "job title inflation". Jobs that used to be considered quite good are now so run of the mill that any fool can do them. This would mainly apply to clerical admin type positions. I think you will find that an established lawyer or a good accountant can still buy the same kind of place their earlier contemporaries would have.

I would agree, my point is that go back a generation and generally if 2 people worked they could afford a house (usually with 1 still being part time), now you both have to work full time in more skilled jobs to have a chance.

In short the whole system has bumped up one on the jobs scale, now I have accepted this and upskilled to suit, but it does leave a whole chunk of a generation who can't afford there own home.

I know many in this current generation that have bought on a single wage.
Maybe the locale makes a huge difference, but certainly it's possible throughout a large part of the UK to buy with one wage.

We may be crossing points here, on a good wage there is many who may still be able to buy on there own depending on areas etc.

I am talking more about the lower end of the market to a point the 'unskilled' workers. My point is the entry level for housing has moved upwards quite dramatically. To which this freezes out more of a generation.

Yes there is sucessful people in every generation, they can buy what ever happens.

I will admit many of the reasons I don't own a home right now is my own doing and I blame nobody else for this (I did play keeping up with the Joneses for a while), but my point is I have had to raise my game higher than the previous generation to get less back.

This isn't a moan but an observation, I have done everything to sort it out in my life and don't just sit here bitter and twisted moaning, more a case of trying to educate many who seem to think my generation have it easy. (I will admit there is many who are already aware of this to which I apologise)
