Debt in dubai

Options
Hi.. I need serious advice. Please help.

I have a 60k (USD) debt in Dubai with an international bank. It's been 3years since I left the country. They had debt collectors calling me up in my home in my home country but I'm actually living in another country at the moment. I have recently received an email saying they will file to international court.

Can someone please tell me what will happen if the international court proceedings goes through? Will I be banned or get arrested if I go back to my home country? Or will I have problems travelling with that passport?

I also have dual citizenship, will I be fine if I just use the other passport (other than the one I borrowed the loan with) ?

Please help... I would love to pay back but I really am struggling to even pay rent at the moment. Thanks alot...

You mention various countries but don't say if one of them is the UK, nor do you say if this is personal debt or related to a business.

However, you do say you need "serious advice" and I don't believe a situation as complicated as yours can be reliably answered on a forum like this where you have no idea whether any of the answers you may get can be trusted, however well intentioned they may be.

I would suggest seeking professional legal advice in whichever country you are now residing.

Chalkie is bang on - you need very specific legal advice. The good news is that debt (under UK law) is civil, you cannot be imprisoned for it, and you cannot be forced to pay something you do not have, and leave it long enough it becomes unenforceable. You can have a miserable old time being chased for it, and it may vary a bit by country/jurisdiction, but don't panic too much before you see a lawyer.

Hi - I lived in Dubai so can possibly give some help. Firstly, the debt is a criminal offence in Dubai, which is not like the Uk. The fact that you are out of the UAE is a good thing. The first thing to note is that, whilst this is outstanding, and in the future, if you transit through the UAE you are liable to arrest.

With the recession there over the last few years a lot of people left in a hurry and you are correct - a lot of the big banks are chasing this. The are using their subsidiaries in home coutries to chase the debt through civil courts.

If you are in the UK they will trace you and pursue through civil courts. Elsewhere will depend on the country.

As asked, is this personal or business debts?
  • Thank you everyone for the advice!! My home coutry is new zealand but I'm in hong kong at the moment. It is a personal loan..

They said they are filing to intentional court.. Can Interpol actually arrest me or will I have problem entering or leaving or get arrested in New Zealand with my new Zealand or other passport???

contact a solicitor, its not worth prison is it?
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

I doubt NZ will want to extradite you over a personal debt, but I really don't know for sure - so see a lawyer, or even find a kiwi lawyer you can email and ask for advice.
