Pregnancy in Notice Period

Hi,

Does anyone know what happens if you get pregnant in between quitting one job and starting another?

I have to give 3 months notice in my job, to move to another company which has good maternity benefits. Both jobs actually do, so that isn't why I am moving, but I don't want to end up in a position where I don't get benefits from either company!

We have been vaguely trying for a year or so, with no luck, but I don't want to wait forever to move jobs. I had been sort of holding off as it would be hard to change with a baby. I am not trying to play the system, just don't want to end up in a situation where I am staying in a job I don't like (when there are much better ones around) and also not able to have kids.

We can't afford to live on one salary, and I only intend to take 6 months off.

Does anyone know if there are standard rules around this? How soon do I have to tell a company, and do they normally have a minimum period of working with them before they will allow you claim Maternity leave?

Thanks!

There is no minimum of working to take time off for maternity leave there is however for pay. You must be employed for 41 weeks before the EWC so you would not qualify in your new role. You would not qualify in your old job either as you will leave before the maternity pay is due!

Sorry not great news, you will be able to claim maternity allowance from the government but its not a lot.

The benefits from the company would most likely be larger than the statutory maternity pay, so does the 41 week rule normally apply for benefits provided by a private company?

Incidentally, is there anywhere you can see a list of the benefits normally provided by an employer. My new employer 'should' cover Mat leave, as most in the industry do, but it's hard to check. It's not in my contract, and is presumably in the detailed T's & C's which you can only see after you start! It's hard to ask for obvious reasons.

It's a big national company, so are there any lists of common employers that people know of?

If you name the company someone may be able to help. However it is highly unlikely that you would qualify if you were pregnant before you started. For example where I work it is 12 months from when you are due (so you have to be working for 3 months before conceiving - roughly). So you may be left with Maternity Allowance.
MSE aim: more thanks than posts :j

I'd rather not say the company, I am still early in the interview process.

I did find them listed on a site in 2007 saying:
'Maternity: If you have done 26 weeks' service, then you get 18 weeks' full pay, followed by SMP. ' Which is a good sign... presumably it hasn't gotten any worse since then. The main issue is the 26 weeks (although, at this rate it won't be a problem, but good to know!)

Edit: This would appear to possible to be 14 weeks at start date. Seems unlikely...

    Hi,

So things have moved on, but I still can't get an answer, so I will have to see if anyone here knows!! Does anyone know anything about Aviva's maternity policies?

    Thanks
