Student Tax NT Code

Hi all,

Getting very mixed answers from the tax office and any advice would be appreciated!

I filled out a P46 on starting a temporary summer job giving me a 747L Tax Code. I was then told by the tax office to send them a P38 so they could change my tax code to NT so I am not taxed during my temp contract.

I called up again tonight to be told that the tax office do not deal with P38 forms and now that I have a 747L tax code they don't think it is possible for me to change to NT and if it is possible it it completely my employers that are to deal with this change.

I'm very fed up with calling up and getting different advice each time. Could someone please set this straight for me??

Many thanks in advance! :)

It is the employer's responsibility to issue you a P38 and not pay tax accordingly.

However if you intend to work at all outside normal holidays, you can't use the P38.

It's quite possible you won't get taxed anyway if you're on a 747L code. This code means you can earn £7475 before tax in 2011/12 but that allowance gets apportioned equally over the year. By the end of September, i.e. half-way through the tax year, you could therefore have earned £3737.50 before you would have had to pay any tax. If you are only working during your holidays then, unless you've got a particularly well paid casual job or work lots of hours, you probably won't earn enough to pay tax anyway.

If you did earn enough to pay tax you would be able to claim some or all of it back, but more than likely you wouldn't see the repayment until next summer!
