searches on credit report

I have been turned down by 2 prime lenders due to a £9k default in 2006 I am paying back at £50 per month.

I have now had a decision in principle from Kensington (just been reading other posts on here about them). They know about the default and seem ok but are doing further checking, they also know I have been refused by a prime lender. Problem is it's 2 prime lenders as one application was a joint one with partner. I am now doing it in my name only. Could 2 searches go against me even though I could give a reason why? thanks I also got accepted by Aldermore, but not as good a deal as Kensington, though they did not leave a footprint on my credit report.
