Mileage & Fuel Tax Relief

Hi there everyone,

I've been googling this for over an hour and although I have found the info I need, I still have a few unanswered questions!!

The threads on this forum that google directed me to were a few years old, I apologise if there is an updated thread but I'm new to this site and don't quite know my way around it yet!!

I am starting a job as a Carer on Wednesday, the company I work for does not give me anything towards mileage costs or fuel (I have to drive to peoples homes, sometimes on the other side of the city). I will only be working part-time so probably wont earn enough to pay tax, so is it worth claiming the tax relief? If what I've understood to be true, I dont get reimbursed the actual amount i would use anyway, it would just be deducted of my taxable income? If this is true, then I don't see the point!! If i'm wrong though, please, please, please let me know as getting 45p a mile from the government will be amazing!!

All my previous jobs were based in the one place so I have never had to bother about this, although in actually looking into it, I never knew there was such a thing as a laundry allowance for the uniform!! I did work in Safeway for 11 years and then Nationwide for 4 but never mind!! The past 6 i've been in an office wearing my own clothes, booo!!!

All the people that I have spoke to while i've been training, dont know the correct answers to this either, a very grey area for a lot of us!!

Thanks in advance x x x

Yes you have got the hang of it. The claim for travel expenses is deducted from your income and the tax due calculated on the reduced figure.

If you are sure that your total taxable income is going to remain under the personal allowance then I suppose you do not gain from making the claim. But I would keep the records in any case because your earnings might increase suddenly during the tax year if you are offered extra work.
If it’s not important to you, don’t consume it

Thank you for clarifying that for me!!

I realise I will be earning enough to be taxed so i'm going to do it anyway, nothing to lose really!!
