Help! Accepted for finance, oh no we're not!

A couple of months ago I signed up for a sofa at Harveys and was accepted for 0% finance for 11 months. they rang up a couple of weeks ago and said they had changed their finance company and I had to go down and re-apply with their new finance company. I did this and was turned down. Harveys told me that they would enquire as to why this was and tell the finance company that I had already been accepted with the previous company, they told me that they would get back to me on the following monday (2weeks ago) if there was still a problem. They didn't call back, so we presumed everything was ok. we had a phone call this morning arranging delivery for this Saturday
& then another call this evening saying finance had still not been agreed & the sofa could not be released untill it had, we are so angry, we have sold our current sofa because finance had already been accepted originally, My partner has just returned from Harveys trying to take over this finance deal so we can still have the sofa delivered Saturday & has also been declined, we have paid a 10% deposit and signed an agreement with the original finance company. we are also now without a sofa of our right that we own. We have been on the phone to Harveys asking for there help or advice, they are being very un-helpfull saying other than paying in full, up front, 1000 pounds we can't have it, Do we have any rights here? Or does anyone have any advice? please
Thank you, Lucy

Not sure really, but you should get your deposit back.
If they refuse as the 'furniture' has been ordered, refuse to leave and kick up a fuss whilst customers are there ... they'll soon think twice.

How about a credit card with interest free for 12 months?

Mayhem. What a nightmare for you. You could try contacting Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06 or visit their website. https://www.consumerdirect.gov.uk. They are really helpful, tried them once myself with good results. They even have print off factsheets, excellent for taking with you as back up. Good luck with it, and I hope it's soon sorted out.Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless. ~ Mother Teresa0

What a disgraceful company, mind you they have some cracking excuses. My sofas were delivered to inverurie rather than inverness (it had something to do with their new computer). Then it was going to be another 3 weeks, offered to pick them up myself, unfortunately they were in lithuania or somewhere like that. Ended up with almost a sit in in their store in inverness before i got a full refund, went straight to Reids and bought one, hired a van and delivered it myself. Must remember, next time, to ensure the sofa fits in the house first.......
Harveys were unhelpful to say the least, after they appeared on watchdog their MD gave his number for anyone who still had problems with their customer service department, I called and got the usual bull......would never use them again if they were the only pvc manufacturor in the land.
sorry I know it doesn't help much...You cant take the trousers off an elephant!0 -
Thanks for advice everyone, your right Harveys are very unhelpfull, they wouldn't even give us any discount (In fact they laughed it off when I put it to them) or even throw anything in for free, like a leather care kit (£40) we got nothing! not even an apology, we shall never give them another penny of our money, we decided to pay on the credit card, (We did ring our credit card companys asking for a good rate on a transfer, they all said "At this time we can't offer any discounted rate" so we paid in full & will try to transfer the balance over the next few weeks by applying for a new card.
We shall be complaining to head office (what good that will do, I do not know) at the lack of friendly customer service.

Our problems started when our so called top of the range sofas arrived from Harveys. One had a hole in the side, and on the other the leather did not lay flat on the arm.
Harveys would not replace them straight away, so we had to wait a week (original 3 weeks, until my husband threatened the store with legal action), for an upholsterer to look at them. On the one with a hole he placed some tape on the inside, and the other one he said he would come back to remove the leather from one side of the settee. This was unacceptable, and after another 6 weeks we finally received 2 more settees, which luckily were fine- this was after a few strong discussions with the store Manager, as Customer SErvices were useless.
We would never even consider buying anything from Harveys again.0 -
Maybe I am missing something here, but surely by signing up with a finance house for the 0% and by been accepted you have entered into a contract with Harveys to supply the suite, financed by the finance house?? So by changing the finance house Harveys have broken the contract not you?
Admittedly it may all be covered by the t&c's all companies can hide behand, but bear in mind you can use these to your benefit. I am thinking about the line that goes on that you if the contract is broken, certain costs incurr?
The Consumer Credit Act 1974, Revised 2006 would be a good place to start, not sure if a Citizens Advice will be able to help?
Bear in mind you have now had two credit searches (at least) made against your name and address.

Harveys did this to me, I had to fight to get my deposit back, when the said finanace was agreed then they revoked it in exactly the same way as you, and threatened them with the local paper (father used to be editor there).
Disgraceful shocking and appaling, I have heard of so many issues with this company, I recommend anyone else to shop somewhere different for your sanity!Lightbulb moment 27-11-06
