Wescot/BT Debt confusion!

Hello
I had an outstanding debit with BT around 2 years ago. The balance was passed on to Wescot Debt Collectors and I arranged a direct debit to pay off the balance. Around May 2010 I recieved a letter from Wescot stating that I no longer needed to pay them as the balance had been passed back to BT. I then imidiatly called BT to verify this. I was told that I owed nothing and that any debt had been passed back to BT. I spoke to Wescot to clear this with them. They were adament I did not need to pay them and that BT held the balance.
I took this as nobody wanted to take responsibility for the balance and forgot about it. It wasnt a large amount of money. No more than £200.
I heard nothing for a year, untill I got this letter yesterday. The letter said I needed to call them urgently in regards to a matter with BT. So I did. They told me BT had asked them to contact me as I owed £288!!
So I done the whole ringing around again to both BT and Wescot are still saying the same as before. BT say all debts been passed to Wescot, Wescot say all debt is clear and passed back to BT. Neither for them know anything about this Atlantis company (I think thats what they were called, will check the letter tonight when I get home).
I have kept6 all the letters and final bills from BT etc. APART from the letter from Wescot saying I no longer need to pay them! The most importent one of them all. But I have requested that they send me a new letter confirming that I owe them nothing and any balance has gone back to BT.
I am so totally confused!!
Legally, where do I stand? (in simple terms! )
Any help will be greatly appciated

I know! Its really worrying me!
When I recieve all the info and letter back from both Wescot and BT and spoken to this other agency then I'll let you know what happens and what they say
It sounds a bit dodgy to me. I dont know how they got my new address, I can only assume it was through the recent census0 -
could be an agency fishing for money - heard that some do that sometimes... no expert on stuff like that but I'm sure someone will pop over and set me straight!Life is too short not to love what you do.0

The agency that sent me a letter is Advantis Credit. Today I have made a series of phone calls to BT and Advantis and even ANOTHER credit agency!
Advantis: Spoke to Kate. She said I owe x amount from acc ******127 which was passed on from BT to them on 6th may 2011
BT: Had account ******127 checked. System says the debt was passed on to Moorecroft in May 2009.
Moorecroft: Checked postcode, checked my name.. nothing on system
BT: Spoke to someone else, he confirmed that it was passed on to Moorecroft May 2009. He said if I give my account number (acc ******127) to Moorecroft, they will be able to find it.
Moorecroft: Lady checked everything again including the BT acc number, still nothing
This is just being bounced back and forth! I'm now waiting for letter to come from Wescot, BT & Advantis confirming what they know in regards to this.0
