Commuting to London
Hi everyone,
I am going to be commuting by train from Horley to Camden Town, Mon - Friday (peak times) every week from now on. I am 24, so eligible for a rail card. Can anyone who does the same or similar commute suggest how I can do this as cheap as possible (without cycling, walking taking the bus etc)?
Any help would be great as at the moment the basic season ticket is >£2,700!
Thanks
Mike

Running?Thought for the day: each generation of mankind tends to hug the illusion of having reached the culmination of human achievement. Yet, as we scoff at our groping ancestors, so our descendants will surely scoff at us.

The only thing which occurs to me is that there is a rail line which goes from Willesden Junction to Brighton via Olympia, presumably passing somewhere near Horley en route. I can't remember where it stops in NW London before WJ, but it is possible to get a bus from Finchley Rd, for example, to CT. Not a journey I would want to do every day, but it does avoid Zone 1........
Ah. I see you said 'no bus'. How serious is this request? Have you actually done the journey even the quickest way? Wouldn't it be cheaper to get a flatshare somewhere N of CT??????
Second edit: Solved it! I don't like to let this sort of problem defeat me. Olympia to Camden Road by overground train. I'm not guaranteeing anything about it being a QUICK journey, but it does avoid Zone 1Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).0 -
Anyone can buy a Network Railcard, but you'll be able to get a Young Person's Railcard. Not sure whether you'll be able to use this at peak times - you can't use a Network Railcard before 10 on weekdays, and minimum fare is £13.0

You can't use a young persons railcard for travel in peak times other than in the summer (july and august I think)
Thats going to be a very long journey if you avoid zone 1. From Horley the quickest option will be getting the train to London Bridge and the northern line to camden from there.
Having commuted from Redhill to Kings Cross for work I agree with the person who suggested moving. That commute will be at least an hour and a half each way and there are plenty of cheap places to live in east and north london. Try Dalston junction, finchley and archway if moving is an option for you.GC: Jan £118.67/£175
