Wrong tax code?

I will be taking this up with my manager, but just wondered if anyone could give any advise...

I just noticed that my May payslip shows the same tax code as my April one - shouldn't it have gone up? Also, the tax code is 612L which, having looked on the HMRC website doesn't seem to match with any personal allowance, this year or last?!

I don't have any benefits, car or health insurance so as far as I am aware I should have 747L this year and should have had 647L for the past two years - is that correct?

If so and I have been paying too much tax, can I get it back?

Realised that I got my months wrong above - the tax code should have changed in April shouldn't it?

Yes it is correct. Your tax code should have gone up in April

Your P2 coding notice should have explained why your tax code is below the norm. In the absence of a P2 coding notice then phone HMRC and find out why and if it is correct.

For this tax year, once you are on the correct code ( if there is a mistake) you will get the overpaid tax back automatically.

For last tax year you will need to send your P60 to HMRC and request a refund stating that you feel your tax code was wrong.

    Thanks for your reply

I don't recall ever having received a coding notice, I will have to have a hunt around to see.

Will I also be able to claim a refund for 2008/2009?

Have now unearthed my coding notice - it says my code is 647L - so does that mean the error is with our pay dept?

I take it that was your coding notice for 10/11? What about this tax year?

If you are talking about last year when you were on 612L and your coding notice says 647L there is obviously some communication problem between HMRC and your employer. The codes are normally sent electronically - your employer may well say that 612L was the one HMRC told them to use.

best bet would be to phone HMRC up, check what tax code they have you down for for this tax year and if it's 747L ask them to resend it to your employer as they are using a different code.

For last tax year you will have to apply for a refund as I said.
