 Your boss is quite right, there's no tax allowance on commuting costs. I searched and searched for something I could do about my over-£4k rail season ticket and HMRC are pretty clear sadly (unless you're a contractor outside PAYE, and base yourself closer to home, travelling to your client as required...)0
