Backdate code or not

Hi all
I turned 65 in Oct 2010 and my state pension started and tax code changed.
I want to check the tax I have paid
Does the new code apply from April 2010 or do I have to split it in some way ?

TIA
:)

The new personal allowance will apply for the whole of the tax year so April 2010.

I'm asssuming you are either working with a salary or have a pension other than the state pension

you should have received a notice of coding explaining the new tax code but also your taxcode on your salary or private pension should have changed

it's likely to be on a M1 or Wk1 basis
have a look and tell us what it is.

I'm sorry but you are confusing me I received new tax codes but they explain nothing M1 or Wk1 mean nothing to me
All I want to know is if the £9490 personal allowance applies from the begining of the tax year April 2010
    TIA

Yes it does - but Clapton was proviing additional helpful ion over and above your question which, to me at least, goes hand in hand with your query.

The M!/Wk1 suffix that Clapton asked about would have meant that the tax code was a non-cumulative tax code and therefore previous tax payments from April until October 2010 would not have been taken into account.

If there was no M1/Wk1 suffix it would probably have meant that you paid the correct tax at the end of the year.

As I said already it applies for the whole year.

information and details is everything when dealing with tax

I've already asked the question but to repeat

what is your tax code (exactly as it appears on your payslip) say Feb or March ?

Clapton I'm sure you have your reasons for wanting to know but does it really matter what the tax code suffix was?

From what I can gather the OP knows how much was received in tax year 10/11 and how much tax was paid. All he/she needed to know was whether the increased personal allowance was due for the whole tax year or just from when he/she turned 65.

    well

yes or no depending upon whether the OP wants the correct answer.

if the OP already knows the correct answer then they have no reason to ask

therefore I have made the assumption that they may or may not know much about taxation

asking for a tax code is hardly being intrusive

only if one knows the tax code can one say whether or not it is cumulative (back dated ) or not.

as you doubtles know the HMRC often give a M1 tax code when the person starts their state pension and does NOT give a cumulative code

this has the effect of 'protecting' the persons salary or private pension income once the 'new' taxcode is implemented

of course that means they underpay tax in that year

the underpayment in tax is then collected in the following year

that in short, is why I'm asking for the taxcode.

but I'm happy to give up on the situation.

No I agree. I was only trying to work out why you were asking in case I was missing something.

    True.

    Agreed.

the underpayment in tax is then collected in the following year

However we have the added complication here that the increase in the personal allowance may cancel out the underpayment in tax.
that in short, is why I'm asking for the taxcode.

Wouldn't you also need the relevant figures as well though?
