What options are there for retraining as an adult?

Its a dead loss trying to pursue a career as a carpenter around here anyway, all has went bust and my own company is on its last legs.

So what are the options I would have for retraining? I want something that would actually be worthwhile and get me a job rather than some pointless government scheme to make the unemployment figures look better I.E ECDL and the likes.

I want a job in I.T, I know its pretty saturated at the moment, I have the knowledge (self taught) just have no qualifications to back up the claims and I don't want the hassle of working for myself.

Any ideas? I should add I am about to be made redundant so will be on benefits.

I am not sure I can answer your question but I went for an interview a few weeks ago, sadly didn't get the job, I asked the agency should I re train for something else maybe go to college? She said I prob wouldn't stand much more of a chance of employment as any jobs she gets state must have experience, (see my post below) and employers don't want to have to be training people at the moment they want people who can 'hit the ground running' in her words.

She said she had a guy who was a chiropodist and he re trained to be an accountant but they couldn't get him a job due to his lack of experience aarrrgghhh! Chicken and egg, be nice if some employers could come on here and give their point of view!

Can you work for yourself? advertise locally I know everyone is strapped for cash so maybe the big jobs like fitting kitchens aren't out there but maybe smaller jobs? Then again I need a new front door but can't afford it but if I could I would need a carpenter! Sorry! not much help!

I can't work for myself as tools are employers, I've never needed tools as employers always supplied these, I think thats the way it is with carpenters.

Check out what your cities colleges offer in terms of part time courses.A lot of these are free or cheap if you are on benefits.
