in Cutting tax
A family friend's 17 yr old son has secured a part time job which is salaried plus commission. He has just received his first pay cheque and apparently, it has been taxed at source. However, his annual salary is very unlikely to reach the personal allowance. Also he is still in school.
Does he have to wait to the end of the tax year to claim a refund? Does he qualify for any further tax breaks given that he is in school and only 17?

His tax code should be 747L, what does it say on his pay slip?

as it is his first job , he will not have a p45 to hand in, and the employer will use a code of 0T
did he complete a p46 when he started? if not ask for one, tick box a and hand back to the employer will update the code to 747L and repay any excess tax
no other tax breaks for being a student, he has the same personal allowance as anyone else. He's not an accountant - he's a charlatan0 -
Thanks for the help. Much appreciated.0
