best reason to specify to get an overdtraft?

They declined the application when provided with the reason for the overdraft. Why should other customers have to pay higher rates because people lie, get credit and then fail to repay? Because that's exactly what happens.
I didn't claim this was "crime of the century" as you put it. But the willingness of people to lie in order to borrow is one of the reasons this country is in a mess right now. Lying to obtain credit is an act that has a cost that is picked up by others.
