Sallie Mae UK student loan repayment

Hi,
I had taken up a loan with a private student loan company Sallie Mae UK in 2007. I know they went bust not long after that and I have not heard from them since. Now some company called Total Credit Financial Services UK Limited has contacted me via email claiming that now they are in charge of the debts and I need to start making repayments to them. I cannot find that company online and the email seemed a bit suspicious. I am not sure where I can ask for advice. Cannot get any information about that company.
Any advice would be valuable.
Thank you,
S.

Its a UK subsidiary of a Canadian company. There are debt collectors.
When any debt collector starts chasing you for a debt its usually advised to start by sending the prove it letter. This is to get them to prove that you owe the money and also to prove they have a right to collect the debt.

I have seen similar posts where people were contacted over a year ago by this company for old Sallie Mae debts.

  • Hi Tixy,

Thank you for your advise. I will send that letter to them. Is there anything else I can do? Maybe I could call the police and ask them to check on that company?

    Thanks!

    Hi Tixy,

You must be astonishingly naive if you think the police will have the time or inclination to check up on a company just because you've never heard of them. If you really want to know more about them have a look here but be prepared to pay for the information.
  • Hi, I have received correspondance from Total Credit Financial Services UK as well regarding a Sallie Mae loan. Studentloan1 could you keep me posted as to what happens with your acccount and what Total Credit Financial Services UK say about your letter.

I will send my own when I return home.

I think that's a little harsh. The situation with Sallie Mae/Total Credit Financial Services is a little more complicated than your standard debt query - I have had very different advice about it. Sometimes it's difficult to know where to get sound advice from or where to report suspicious activity from potentially scamming companies.

Its fair to say that we are all a bit naive when it comes to this particular situation (except Tixy - THANKS for your helpful advice) - why else would we be using this forum??
