I wouldn't call the Co-op a local shop. I know it's split into different societies across the country but the main Co-op Group is the fifth biggest supermarket chain now that it has bought Somerfield. It's also got a store in every postcode and has got more stores than Tesco. Where I live there's three of them very close together and they're expensive, have long queues, run out of stocks quickly and when I go there to find an advertised deal, they don't stock the products!

Tesco has nearly 6,000 stores in the UK whilst the Co-Op has around 3,500.

I have never done a full shop at the co-op, but I do shop there daily before I work and after, and I do admit they are expensive on some things, but they have good offers, and the staff are always extremely friendly and helpful.

Where did you get these numbers from?

I am probably wrong to be fair, just did a quick check on google and wiki and found my numbers! Quite surprising to hear Tesco has less, with the recent expansions.

edit: Seems I have worldwide numbers!

Co-op is expensive i think. The card you get they give you a share of the profilts each june and november. First time i got a card the letter came in and they'd took £1 off my profits to pay for the card!. Something they never told me about.

No probs relic - they were in a magazine called The Grocer. It was the same issue that called Martin Lewis the most powerful man in retail.
