Tesco Free Yeast

My local Tesco in Broughton gives free yeast from the baking department - just ask - great for bread or pizzas. Is this a universal service?

  • As far as I know yes. I used to work in the Asda bakery and we used to give it away free to anyone who asked. The supermarkets pretty much get it free themselves with the amount of flour that they buy in.

What's the 'use-by'/'best before' for fresh yeast, please?

    Thanks
  • I've found fresh yeast lasts between 1 and 2 weeks in the fridge if it's kept in a plastic bag. I've been told you can freeze it if you want by cutting it into cubes then wrap and freeze but I always get mine fresh.

You need about half an ounce for a large loaf or equivalent buns so supermarkets usually give you about 10 times too much when you call, but I share with the neighbours.
    Nice to save.
  • Nice one, anyone a fail safe recipe for pizza base? What type of flour etc?

All fresh bakeries of major Smarkets offer this service. Morrisons, Sainsbury & Tesco. As well as that you cannot freeze it yeast is a living organism if you freeze it you kill it. Best kept in the fridge but not damp.
    It pays to challenge

Way OT here of course but is that really true? I thought most single celled organisms could withstand being frozen, it merely stops them multiplying...?
The above facts belong to everybody; the opinions belong to me; the distinction is yours to draw...
  • FRESH yeast, (which is what i believe tesco's provides) as long as its well wrapped, you can freeze it and it will keep for upto four months. you should defrost it for 24 hours in a fridge before using it. You can also just keep it in the fridge as someone else has already said. :)

  • I used to run a pizza shop with my auntie, and as I passed a Tesco on my way to work, I would pop in and get some yeast most days. It made much better bases than the powdered stuff!
