Grecian 2000 - why is it for blokes?

For years the adverts have been on the telly, bloke with a sprinkling of grey washes his hair in Grecian 2000 and it's all gone.

Do they have one for women? Why's it only blokes? Does it 'wash out'? What's the deal with this stuff?

Why don't I know anyone who uses it?

(How did your mind happen to wander that way today btw?)

I've been highlighting my hair for about 10 years, had it "trimmed" last week (first trim since last oct/nov) so there were plenty-o-roots ... and the hairdresser was a bit enthusiastic and managed to cut all the blond out... no worries. Brown's fine... I can see I have a small sprinkling of greys. No worries... until today. Today I open up my email to discover some aunts, who I have never seen ever before, are arriving next week for a flying visit - and they're "a bit posh/proper", so I wondered if I should be vain enough to do some kind of cover up.

I've often wondered why its only for men. Doesnt that break some sort of law?

This reviewer wasn't impressed (l-o-n-g review, starts to be relevant halfway down!)

Why don't you just stick a semi from the poundshop on it? Cheaper too!

    Ta.

Re "why don't you...." because I've never done this before and didn't know I'd need a semi - and didn't know you could get a semi from the poundshop :)

    I'm a beauty n00b.

I just remembered the adverts from the 1980s and thought "I wonder..."

I have no idea why they are for men I think they are semi permanantish as I know they wash out eventually, I have a Loreal Mens one sitting in my cupboard that I won on the comps board and I just don't fancy it however I do have a suggestion for you, invest in some Nice n Easy, the new foam one is super easy to use and gives excellent grey coverage that lasts, if you don't want red tones in your hair stick to a colour that says ash in the title and as with most permanent home colourants go a shade or two lighter than you think you need as they always come out darker, the John Frieda mouse colour is another great product but slightly more expensive and the colours are not as reliable as the Nice n Easy. As you are a beauty newbie I would suggest after colouring your hair not to wash it with anything too stripping for example Head n Shoulders or any type of clarifying shampoo but you don't need a colour saving shampoo just something moisturising, I like the light blue Herbal Essences from the High Street or Kersatsse Bain Satin premium range - if you have anymore questions I'm happy to try and help:)

...........also to carry on from glowgirl's excellent advice, I would say don't condition it or use a 2 in 1 shampoo the wash BEFORE you colour it . The colour takes best on hair that does not have a residue of products.

Not sure if this has anything to do with it or not!!

Grecian 2000 used to contain metallic salts. Metallic salts have a very nasty way of reacting with other colours, perms and some types of styling products

Maybe Grecian 2000 was directed at men (bearing in mind the age of the product) as men didn't tend to colour their hair or use so many styling products, so no reaction?

I am not sure if it still contains the metallic salts now, and I am not sure about Lady Grecian either.

This post made me think that because its *technically* not a hair dye as it fades away then it might be made to appeal to men who still wouldnt have to admit to dying their hair:undecided especially older men not from the metrosexual generation:rotfl:just a thought, shouldn't stop a woman using it though.
