Poor old OH made redundant

My OH has just found out that on Friday, he'll be jobless. He's a welder/fabricator, has been for 20 years, and is of course already doing the rounds ringing around and going for interviews. 12 others though have lost their jobs, so it's not going to be easy. He really wants to try for something completely different, but we (obviously!) need money while he's learning something different.
Any ideas, pointers, suggestions (hugs of sympathy!) gratefully received.
