Vat charges of £50,000

ANybody help, got a bill for £56100 unpaid VAT, for a ltd company that i shut down. I realise the sum is just a top of their head figure from the IR, but as i was the owner/director can they comeback to me personnally and get the money? Tried speaking to my old accountant and he says just forget it, is he right?
Any help much appreciated.

    Great advice from your accountant!
    Don't forget it.
Have you done your returns? Did you pay what was due?

didnt you submit a last vat return when you wound your company up?

Edit..... I would speak to the vat office.....they are not as bad as you think, unless you are trying to not pay htem what you owe

I suspect that you didn't 'shut the company down' but rather just abandoned it, which is quite common. Unless you have actively behaved in a somewhat dishonest manner then it's unlikely that you will be held personally responsible although, given the amount outstanding (if that's anywhere near accurate) you could find yourself barred from being a Director again for a number of years. I suspect that also won't be something that would unduly worry you.
If you feel my comments are helpful then I'd love it if you 'Thanked' me! :)
  • No the amount is way off. Did leave the company then shut it down properly this Jan. The business stopped, so yes just abandoned. No money was made or left in the account.
Not that am trying not to pay (feel like those Rover directors except not got the £40 million!!) but didnt make money either so this would be coming from me personnaly.
Nothing done illegal, maybe stupidly, but is a concern that may be forced to pay. Can live with not being a director as going back to the simple life, who needs the stress.....

    I don't think you understand.
The fact that you did not make a profit or did not leave any money in the business, does not mean that there is not a VAT liability.
Dis you do a final VAT return? Did you pay over the VAT that you collected?
