locksmiths and home insurance

Hi everyone,
I'm having a really bad month and just paid £100 as I'd locked myself out.

I can't find my home insurance papers but does it usually cover this expense?

If so, does it drive the premium up massively?

Help, I despair.

It's often an optional extra so it will depend on whether you chose to take it out. You'll need to find your policy documents.

Be careful of your excess. I doubt it'd be worth claiming unless you have special coverage for keys/locks.

I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be worth claiming for as your excess probably exceeds this.
It may be worth investing in an exterior keysafe hidden in a secret place. This will eliminate the need for a locksmith in such an emergency and save you £100 next time ;-)

I'm sure your excess will be £100 or more.

If someone did find the hidden key safe it would void your insurance though, which might cost more than £100.

The other cheaper alternative, is to give a spare key to a friend/relative that you trust that lives local.

    thanks for all the replies.

I locked myself out last week and went to pick up the spare key from my sisters house. I didn't bring it back so I couldn't do anything the second time except call the locksmith. I've never done it before, just have too much on my mind at the moment. I'm cross with myself for wasting £100 but my employer gave me £100 the day before to help out with my car bill so I suppose that takes the sting out of it.

    Thanks x

Last year I locked myself out of my car and it cost me £135 to get it open, I felt sick.
Today my oh took the kids to school and got a parking ticket, just after borrowing £100 off her mum, life stinks sometimes.

  • It depends on your policy - I got it through my renewal this year as a "loyalty" bonus for staying with them.
