It is amazing how many teachers think that qts is a qualification. It is a professional status which is granted and can be removed. You can't remove a qualification.

Qualified teacher status. You can get qts through lots of routes not just doing one qualification.

    Hi
I also agree that it is worth calling the TDA.
Funding is not definitely ruled out for doing your training a second time if you do need to do this and there are many more options now for completing training. There is the PGCE route through university, the GTP route (almost like an apprenticeship scheme) and the Flexible PGCE through the open university. It is worth looking at all of them to see which fits your current situation.
    Best of luck.

Erm....that it expires after 5 years.

Do you have a link to back that up? I've never heard of QTS expiring after five years if you don't complete an induction. If you're stating such things as fact, then it would be best to substantiate what you're claiming.

The flexible OU route isn't available for primary.

    From the TDA website

Is there a time limit by which I need to start the induction period after achieving QTS?

No. There can also be gaps between the three terms that make up your induction period once started.

    .tda.gov.uk/get-into-teaching/faqs/becoming-a-teacher.aspx

    Insert the www
  • You can formally apply for extensions and it some specific cases don't have to. Once you start induction you must complete and pass 3 terms within 5 years. If you don't then you can't teach in a maintained school in England.

If you never start nqt induction or teach (and some people get into a mess as they do agency supply) then you may be able to start induction after five years however you need to talk to the tda as it is not always straight forward. In reality it would be almost impossible to get an induction post 5 years after qualifying in most parts of the country.

Just to clarify - you do not need to complete your induction within 5 years of gaining QTS (in case anyone reads that and starts believing it).

I don't have any advice re: qts, though I'm currently training to be a primary teacher myself. I just wanted to say, I'm sorry for your loss and all you've been through and I wish you every luck for the future :)

I'm not very good at succinct. Why say something in 10 words when 100 will do?

If you start the expectation is that you complete it within 5 years ( you can get extensions but many hoops and time limits). If you work in anyway as a teacher in a uk maintained school even on supply you are taking a massive risk of getting into induction complications. If a maintained school employs you then they have certain obligations to start induction (there are some exemptions). If they don't and you are working in a school as a teacher then there can be massive problems.

If you leave university and never teach (even on supply) and never start induction then you could start induction at anytime however it would be highly unlikely that you would be considered to be employable.

I spent 5 years supporting very sill people who fell foul of this system and then found that they couldn't teach.
  • Should add that until recently the 5 years was set. Now it is expectation.

If you fail an induction then again you can't teach.
tbh the tda is being abolished and routes into teaching are being changed and fast tracked and so it will be much less rigid in the future.
