Free Food via freecycle or various other forms of freecycling

I have been thinking about this for a while and cannot see why it would not work in principle.

I use freecycle and many other sites. When I send out an e mail asking for or giving away items, I thought, why don't we add things like food?

How many times have we bought fruit, vegetables, bread and not eaten it all or have too much of it. Maybe you bought stuff, put it in the freezer and have gone off the idea. There must be billions of tons of this stuff clogging up cupboards, freezers, fridges across the country.

What about that tin of fruit sitting in the cupboard that you have gone off eating or those biccies that were on special offer? Maybe you've just started a diet and are getting rid of all your food that you don't want or maybe you are going on holiday and have stuff.

So, why not offer it to someone else instead who could use it? After all, if the country is wasting so much food, don't bung it in landfill, give it to someone who could use it.

I'm no talking about things that are out of date and have potential problems, like live bacteria in yogurts or meat that is out of date, but if we use our common sense we could beat this ourselves without Health and Safety going mad about it. After all, we're responsible adults.

Cheers

I have seen people offering food on my local Freegle site although it doesn't happen too often :)

better still, why don't you donate it to a local homeless charity? I work for one in Manchester and we rely on food donations from the public.
  • If any local charities get on board then what the heck.

As long as we stop wasting our valuable food.

Thanks for replying and spread the word.

Today I gave away 18 cream eggs and 2kg of haribo- I had 30odd requests for it! I think this idea will work... I wonder if anyone will want my hoard of pineapple chunks?

my ex housemates and I once bought a box of 48 cream eggs when they were reduced to 10p ech - we ate them all in one night. Funnily enough I don't really like em anymore!
