I thought you had (and using that loosely) to be given time off to attend interviews. ie your current employer has to allow you every opptunity to further yourself.

They certainly can't sack you for going to an interview however if its on their time and unagreed you will be subject to their disciplinary procedures should you take the time off.

They only have to give time off for interviews if you've been given notice of redundancy.

Going AWOL for 2 days is potentially dismissiable but if you phone in sick would they ever find out?
However that's exactly the sort of approach that the armed forces will not be impressed with as it shows a lack of integrity - something the're quite big on

Id phone in sick. If you ask for the leave and dont get it, it WILL be spotted if you arent there on these dates. Guys at my work get disciplined for this type of stuff occasionally. However, proving that someone really didnt have a dicky tummy or illness of choice is impossible especially as you can self-certify for 2 days.

Also, what type of reference do your work give? Mine only give job title and length of service and reason for leaving, we dont even give the absence.

Do you need a reference from your current employer?

By following lots of advice here and "phoning in sick", you risk this reference should work find out.

The reference could say "OP rang in sick so he/she could attend a job interview". This is factually true, so no issues with writing it.

Not the best way to impress.

Request the time off as unpaid leave.

Phone in sick!! You can offer to take it as unpaid sick time if you feel bad. Don't pay any attention to all these replies telling you to be honest - these people obviously aren't living in the real world.

What sort of interview is it and with what part of the Armed Forces?

I doubt very much another date couldn't be rearranged if push come to shove.
