Starting a new job, working month in hand. Can't figure it out!

Hi,
I start a new job on 17th May, straight after finishing uni. Payday is the 28th of every month. I'll be working a month in hand.
Will this mean that it will be like:
17th May - start
28th May - no money
28th June - pay for the 11 days beween 17-28 may
28th July - pay for month between 29may-28june
I have rent that goes out on the 21st of each month - I have Mays, but not enough for June, plus no money for living!

You would have to ask them. If you started working with us you'd be paid on 28th May for those 11 days, as long as you gave me your 'new starter' forms on day 1 or before and were working regular hours. With other companies you'll have missed their payroll deadline.
If you have missed their payroll deadline, you could ask if they can give an advance, or talk to your bank about an overdraft, or see if you can borrow from family.
If you were an 'as and when' worker, however, you'd be paid on 28th June for any days worked in May.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -

Ask the employer.
How have you found that you will be "working a month in hand"? Is it in writing or was it simply used in conversation?0 -

You're going to have to ask them, it could be anything. I work "one month in arrears" which means that at my place of work, YES, you'd get nothing at the end of May. A payclaim would go in at the end of May for May's hours and you'd be paid at the end of June.
Sucks, but you get used to it - that first month of waiting is a killer, though.
My company has just transferred me, and I lost all my contracted hours during this month, but as I'm employed I can't sign on - NEXT month, June, I'll be working but I'll have no pay at the end of June, as I didn't work in May! :mad:0 -

If your payday is at the end of the month I would expect to be paid for 11 days at the end of May and then a full month at the end of June.Gazing_On_Sunsets wrote: »You're going to have to ask them, it could be anything. Payday and payroll date are usually two different things. For example a company might work out the hours you worked for all of May but then pay this on the 15th of the next month i.e. June 15th. A company rarely runs payroll on the same day it pays the money out as that would be too hectic and leave little room for error correction.
They could have a payment day a month after the payroll period though it is often a much shorter gap. You'll just have to ask though and they might be able to give you an advance as you have a genuine reason.0 -

Are you sure about not being able to sign on regarding May? Sounds like you have been laid off for the month.0
