Going blonde ? Highlights ?

Hello.
I have dark brown hair. I have been going grey for years (45 now) and dye the roots every month or so.
I want to either, go blonde or have lots of blonde highlights.
Any tips please or ideas of prices. At the moment, my hair is a bob and very short at the back
(looking for a new hairdresser as she cut it far too short, despite seeing lots of pictures of how I wanted it )
I'm sick of having grey roots and wondered if the streaks, highlights would help it blend.
If I was really brave, I'd go blonde all over!

I would have highlights, using foils. And do it gradually.
Funny my Nanna is 80 and she has been blonde all her life, not one grey hair in sight, unless it's there but you can't see it due to the blonde lol.. I am naturally fair and have been bleaching my hair for 18 years, the past 8 years I been having foils, I love it. I would love to go dark when my hair has gone a bit longer, and have some highlights same time, love the look.
OR be brave and buy some BBlonde and do it yourself. (will need to do it again day later maybe).

Have highlights, and choose two or more colours for the highlights. This works well for me, and blends in with my 'once-very-blonde-but-now-darker-than-blonde-with-grey' hair very well.
Spend some time choosing colours that will blend in well together and with your natural hair colour, any good hairdresser will help you do that before the highlights start.
This can look fab, so enjoy your new look!

Forgot to say: highlights will also look more natural as they're growing out, and you can have half-head highlights to 'freshen' the colour which is cheaper than going for the full head every time.
Also: ask at your locally recommended hairdressers if they need models for highlighting practice, this can work out a lot cheaper!0 -
Thank you!
I am tempted to have a go myself, by using a highlighter cap and jerome russel bleach.
I cut a small bit of hair and tested it, and it went orangey brown.
I have done it again and am timing it to see if it goes blonde.
I might be brave and try a few highlights myself.
I'll take some photos if I do it either way!0 -
Agree with highlights being a good move, but if yourhair is very short at the back they won't be able to highligh this section so bear that in mind. I had a cut like this with highlights but just left the underneath darker and it looked good that way, but not sure if the underneath was grey?
I do my own highllights with cap and it's very easy. You might need someone to help do the crown as it is a bit tricky pulling them through even with mirrors! I would go with very , very thin strands - you can alway add more but very hard to change if you end up stripey!
Be careful not to put the cream on the hols in the cap or you get a spotty head effect. I use gloves and pull thecream onto the strands rather than a brush and find this works well.
I only use half a sachet of cream and powder for a T section of highlights on very long hair so don't waste a whole packet by mixing it all up.
If you end up too blond you can use a brown hair dye with the cap to break the colour up a bit.
Personally I like a few colours so I do darker brown and bleach alternate (about once a month).
Looking forward to the pics - do a before and after!0 -
Thank you vikki. Brilliant tips.
My hair grows really quickly, and is thick and in good condition, so should take a bleach ok.
My son wanted his purple a while.
I bleached his and it went a lovely golden colour. It took the purple really well.
I'd love bright pink hair, like Zandra Rhodes. In my dreams though.
Not brave enough to go that far.0 -
Or just throw the whole hair dye on ya head? And repeat if needed the next day. Then by the time it's grown long enough, you can have foils ? Or re do it?
If you don't like it, use a hair dye with out ash (risk of going green lol) in to make it darker again.0 -
Well, i went for the full head of hair.
I tested 2 bits of hair and had to bleach them twice, to get a lovely light blonde, with no red or orange in.
Now I am sat here with orange/yellow hair.
I have run out of dye, so have to brave going out to buy some more

The condition is good though.
I have read I could put a light ash blonde hair colour on top? Any ideas?
Will add, I hate my hairstyle. It is supposed to be a bob. The hairdresser cut it far too short. It's longer at the sides, but far too short at the back, even though I told her where to cut it.
I need to buy a toner apparently as well. Daft head should have thought of this before0
