Tesco free eye test but kept my prescription

Options
Six months ago Tesco were offering free eye tests at their in-store opticians.

I wear glasses but haven't had an eye test for a few years and I'm strugggling now I'm in my 50s so I made an appointment and went along for the test.

I asked the optician for my prescription and he said he would keep it safe for me until after I had chosen my glasses and I was handed over to sales staff to choose my new glasses.

I was short on time and said I had to go. This was one reason and the other was they were expensive. Even at this stage I wasn't given my prescription.

My question is was I entitled to it? Was it NHS or was it Tesco's free offer and hence belongs the them?

Is it worthwhile going back to ask for it? I felt a bit intimidated by the family that ran the opticians as they weren't always speaking English in my prescence. Do Tesco sell opticians franchises or was it part of Tesco?

Should I have another eye test elsewhere and just pay the NHS fee?

I should add, I think the optician was very thourough with my eye test.

It's just that the sales staff was directing me towards the most expensive designer frames and they didn't give me my prescription.

You should go back and just ask for it. You are entitled to go anywhere for the prescription to be made up.

Very naughty of them, but another sales tactic.

Just go back and ask for a copy of your prescription. They have to give it to you whether it was free or not.

However you may have to retrospectively pay for the eye test if the condition at the time was a free eye test if you buy the specs from them.

  • Lots of places do this but the prescription is yours. !!!!!! may have a point about the 'freeness' of the test having conditions. Go get 'em!

Eye tests at Tesco opticians are always free regardless of whether or not you buy glasses, so it wasn't an offer with T&C's.

Both my oH and I got our eyes tested there, OH bought a cheapo pair of glasses as spares then asked for his prescription so he could get his own glasses regalzed, they were happy to give it to him.

I got mine done about 6 months later and bought a fairy cheap pair, not the cheapest though, because I only need to wear them occasionally for distance, when I asked for my prescription the optician was really rude and was very reluctant to give it to me.

Seems they've cottoned on to people using their free eye test but not getting their glasses from there.
