This question comes up regularly on MSE. There are loads of threads already. Bung London and forums into the search engine above and voila you are there.
If the 12 year old is a boy....... then the Imperial War Museum is the answer on where to go."If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken

Cheapest and most convenient way of getting around would be by travelcard (try buying after 9:30ish as its cheaper). Plenty of free museums to visit in London and a general walk about is great fun, you can probably download maps and things for fun/interesting walks by conducting a websearch. When the weather is good London zoo / London dungeons is always extremely great fun and you can often find 50% off or free child entry tickets by googling. When i used to take my kids into London we would often do a "spot the celebrity / lookalike challenge (just for fun). Also highly recommend London eye / sealife centre / trocadero arcade (if thats your thing) / south bank / hyde park etc etc." When life keeps trying to let you down just remember you are not full of hot air so cannot be deflated"0
