tax self assesment ?????

Hi all
aint been around for a while was made BR 17 feb and all been quiet until the other day...got a letter from inland rev saying that as i was made BR on 17 feb they were writing to my employer to ask how much tax i had paid from 17/02 to end of tax year and then they would pay this to my trustee they also enclosed a self assesment for me to fill in by oct this year stating it could not be done online but in paper form only
Now the question is surely they should know how much tax i have paid as they took it from me didnt they??? and why do i have to do a self assesment as i am paye and they know how much i earn as they tax me from my wages i find this very confussing as i only have my P60 when i recieve it
Has anyone else got one of these???

many thanks
:j

yes lots of people have them, All they know is what you earned in that one particular job, you could have had other sources of income. If this is the only income you have then simply fill in the figures and send it back

I think it probably comes about from HMRC not knowing where to put you on their systems as you have slightly unusual circumstances, And HMRC's usual response to anything slightly unusual is to send you some forms to fill in
