  • In my local market Corby there is one greengrocer 1 butcher but if I go to Leicester or Northampton competition and cheaper prices more choice.
It's only rock and roll but I like it.

My local veg shop is really cheap. Some of the items are cheaper than my husband can get wholesale for his restaurant.
Lead me not into temptation, I can find the way myself.

wins - peroni bottle opener, peroni bowl, peroni coastersx2 and a vodkat cocktail kit,
would love to win something 'proper'!!

Yes I completely agree but I think it really depends on where you live.

When I used to live in Birmingham the market was amazing and I used to do 95% of my food shopping there. I'm a veggie and love cooking from scratch so pretty much lived off veg and stuff from the market, visiting Tesco probably about once every month or 2 to get a few bits and bobs (plus a couple of trips just for booze!) But now I'm back in Lincoln, the prices at the market seem to be more expensive than the supermarkets (unless you buy the nearly mouldy stuff).
So now I mostly shop at the supermarkets when in Lincoln (which has also had a negative effect on my diet as I'm exposed to all the unhealthy crap the supermarkets sell and often can't resist buying it).

I stay in London a lot and go to Brixton Market which is also amazing. Unfortunately I can never get much from there though as I only stay a couple of days a week so it would go off. But there would never be any need for me to go to the supermarket if I lived permanently in London (except for booze offers!)
Hi - I wondered if anyone else has come accross this. I usually buy my veg from supermarkets with my weekly shop. However, the other day I went into a local town where there was a market. I bought:-

    2 x peppers
    2 x little gem lettuce
    1 bunch of spring onions
    1 cucumber
    12 small toms (on vine)

This lot came to the princly sum of £6.10!! I was shocked - especially when I visited Mr T and could have bought the lot for just over half the price.

This has put me off market stall buying ever again! I really want to support the 'local' markets but this has shocked me! What do others think and what is your experience?

The veg/salad didn't last any longer nor did it look particularly fresh. My hubby has delivered this stuff in the past and tells me it's often the stuff the supermarkets reject too!

Looking forward to your opionions :)

i just put your shop through mysupermarket.com and it comes to £5.27 at tesco and £6.00 at asda so its not half the price you paid at the market. plus market goods tend to be fresher than their supermarket equivalent. the idea that supermarkets are cheap just isnt true anymore.
    Wins: 2008: £606.10 2009: £806.24 2010: £713.47 2011: 328.32

I actually make it more like £4.92 at Tesco and the Little Gems are on BOGOF, but still perhaps OP was going a bit OTT when they said that they "could have bought the lot for just over half the price" at Mr Ts.

I do think the market is a lot cheaper, especially when you buy the fruit bowls for £1.

THe problem for me is the convenience. I work full time and so can only get to the market on a Saturday, which either means paying for parking, or parking really far away but for free.

I think the fruit in the market often goes off really quickly, but the veg is fine for ages.

I buy the £1 bowls, usually when they have green beans and massive mushrooms.
