How to avoid the hard sell...

Hiya,

We had our mortgage application interview yesterday. Sorting out the mortgage was quite simple and only took about half an hour but then for the next hour and a bit we were given the hard sell on home and building insurance, life cover, critical illness cover, MPPI etc etc.

Having read a lot of information on here and my own experiences I was inclined to reject a lot of this and look elsewhere.... unfortunately my partner kept agreeing to things. She was really pushy and, being in sales myself, found it left a rather bad taste.

OH has turned around and said that we can cancel it and luckily for the life cover etc I was rejected (phew!) but she said that she would go out of her way to get me accepted (boo!)

How can I politely say that we want to organise all our own stuff. We've budgeted very, very carefully to the point if either of us loses our jobs, gets sick or, god forbid, dies we can manage everything else on our own, it also takes into account rate increases etc. It allows us plenty of money for savings and my OH and I are both covered by death in service cover (which she made a big old point of slating). Also a lot of the cover is coming out a lot higher than I would like... buildings and contents is £30pcm (when I have a quote from elsewhere for £20pcm), initial illness/death cover was something like £60pcm (which is stupidly high imho), MPPI again was about £40pcm.

Any advice on getting rid of these and striking out on our own would be much appreciated.

  • You will almost certainly get better choice, prices and advice from any mortgage/insurance broker/adviser - who (unlike a lender) will look at how ownership and trusts are set up (taking into mind your overall status including job type and benefits/married/cohabiting/children etc).

My recommendation would be cancel it and go and take advice from an independent adviser (make sure they are not tied to one supplier).
