Parcel didn't arrive!!!

My partner sold something on Ebay and asked me to post it, it went as a standard parcel and I was given a receipt with proof of postage. This was on the 18th April.

The buyer is claiming to have not received it and Paypal have now taken £85 from his account and have frozen it until he refunds the money!

We have sent them the proof of postage receipt but that doesn't seem to be good enough.

The item was posted late on the 18th April as far as I can see something isn't lost until the 15 working days mark passes. Due to all the bank holidays it has only been 8.

What do I do know? Please help!

You are about 3 weeks too late asking for advice. I hope he got extra insurance on the parcel.
A much cheaper way is to use a courier, there's a massive thread on them. Mostly 2 day delivery with proof.
Now, all you can do is wait the 15 dAys and make a claim. The refund is done, no way of reversing that.

Can Paypal do that though? Just take it without investigating it first?

if you sent them the cert. then paypal would have seen that you do not have online tracking, so you would automatically have lost the dispute I think.

If you have the cert you can only claim uptp £41 (might have change slightly) so an expensive lesson sadly

Did the buyer contact you first or go straight to a dispute?

When the item was sold the postage stated that it would only be sent Standard Delivery unless they were to pick up the item. The buyer chose to have it sent instead of collecting.

I just hate having to pay out for other peoples errors!

They went straight to the dispute.

The only error is on the selling side i'm afraid.
The buyer paid for an item and delivery, it did not arrive therefore they are fully entitled to a refund.

Its not their error - recorded/special delivery is there to protect the seller not the buyer, for situations such as this.

    Personally I send anything over £41 recorded/special

Its a shame they went straight to a dispute without contact first but unfortunately you have lost out :(

With standard parcels there is an option for extra insurance. If this was not taken out you may have trouble claiming as normal insurance is only 46 pounds.

Did you put a return address on the parcel? If so it is possible that it might be delivered back to you after sitting in the delivery office for a while.

Over 46 pounds Special Delivery is needed. Recorded is no good as it gives no more insurance cover than a CoP with first/second class.

Let's hope that you haven't p'd your buyer off too much by making them to go to a dispute as they now have the COP, you will need this if you are going to try & claim for the loss against RM. occasionally RM contact the recipient as well.
Yes Paypal can and obviously do repay the buyer.
RM will sometimes refuse your claim I believe as you didn't have insurance to cover the true value, the most you will get back is £46, if you can get the COP back from the buyer & they co-operate if RM send them the forms.
It could be, & I'm only saying could be that you have been scammed. A savvy buyer will know that a seller is responsible for ensuring safe delivery of an item using the correct method of posting, any silly terms on your listing, such as I'm not responsible for any loss, I'll send the COP to you if your package is lost, shows you to be someone who doesn't understand either, ebay or the post.
Unfortunately people find this forum after the event, we could, as macfly said, advised you before the worse case happened.
You will need to put money into the paypal account as your account will be passed onto debt collectors if you don't.
However it could be that the item is now being returned to you, as long as you put your return address on it. In which case you will then be able to resell it & recoup your losses.
Do please ask about how to post it & also read up on ebay & paypal claims concerning post & your responsibilities as a seller before trying to sell anything else.
