3 bins in garage, wheelie bin in bin store
until they go into these bins:
small brown kitchen bin on work top
non recyclable in big container in pull out unit
compost carrier in same unit
I store poly bags in small bin in that unit
cardboard paper tins glass etc go into a shopping basket on the floor close to kitchen and is regularly emptied0 -
I have the same three bins as you. I keep the bins down the side of the house in the summer and put the recycling in them as it is created. In the winter the bins are by the back door for convenience.I am playing all of the right notes just not necessarily in the right order

We have a black bin, then clear plastic bag for plastic's, green bag for garden rubbish, black boxes for paper, card, tins, glass, textiles etc.
We hang a plastic bag in the kitchen & add the plastic to it, gets put out daily. Tins etc get washed & put into box when I clear the draining board, paper etc goes by the back door if it is the children doing it & I put it in the box when I am near the door.
I also wash tetra pack's (fruit juice etc) which I take to recycling place near supermarket. Usually take it once bag is full.0 -
as this has dropped down the Old Style board, and it's more a green/ethical query, i've moved it over here to see how others organise theirs
thanks

Where I live the local council operates 4 different recycling/waste containers:
1) A green wheelie bin for garden and food waste
2) A small blue bin for glass
3) A pink sack for paper, cans, plastic etc
4) A black sack for non-recyclable waste
I keep the wheelie bin in the garage and the remaining three containers in a storage cupboard at the front of my house.
I use a 3 section stainless steel recycling bin in my kitchen to store the separate items (excluding glass) which I can then empty into the various containers as and when they become full or just prior to bin collection day.0 -
Thanks to everyone for the really helpful replies and loads of different ideas how to manage this.
I'm struck initially by how different councils have such different systems for recycling.
My system as I write is a an old bag for life next to the kitchen waste bin - I'm putting the recycling in there and will empty it into the bin each evening when I do my final kitchen clean up for the day. I'll get myself a better/more suitable container at some point.
I agree about the original bin hardly needing emptying from now on - I will be putting very little stuff into it. We're already on fortnightly cycle for having the bins emptied which has been a struggle for me up to now, but I can see it working a lot better with the new system.0 -
We have the same system as you but with different colours. The recycling bin is by the front door and our kitchen is at the front of the house. We pile things up on the worktop and pop them in the bin when we tidy up.
My landfill and compostable bins are a walk from the house but since the recycling bin takes so much, we hardly have anything to put in landfill. We use supermarket carrier bags as bin bags and use about one a week I think. We rarely use the compostable bin, only if we have a huge piece of cardboard or if we are throwing plants/greenery away.0
