finding out a baby's sex from scan

Does any-one have any experience of finding out the sex of their unborn baby from a scan at any of the hospitals in Belfast (The Mater , The Royal or even Antrim).
My Daughter is expecting a baby and had chosen to have it delivered in the Mater as this is where her Mum gave birth to all of our Children but she has been told by a friend that the Mater have a policy of NOT revealing the sex of the unborn baby incase thet get it wrong.
Can any new parents confirm if this is correct? Did you give birth in the Mater and they were able to tell you the sex at you're scan?
I know that the Royal DO tell you if you want to know as my Wifes work mate has just became a Grandparent and her Daughter was told at her 20 week scan.
My Daughter really wants to know what she is going to have (impatient I know) and has said that she would change which hospital she uses if it means that she finds out sooner.
So what I guess i am asking is did you recently have a baby in the Mater and were they willing to reveal the sex?
Thanks for any advice.

I had my last three babies at Antrim Area Hospital. They will tell you if you ask about the sex but they will not state 100% that it is either one sex or the other, just that it appears to be ....boy or girl. Having said that they were spot on with my 3 boys but I think that was because there was very obviously a set of testicles hanging there on all 3 scans lol.
A neighbour of mine was told she was having a boy at antrim and went out and bought everything in blue only to deliver a wee girl a few months later so it isn't always accurate. If finding the sex out is essential maybe you should consider a private scan. How does a brown cow give white milk, when it only eats green grass?0 -
I don't know about the hospitals' policies, but Paul Fogarty in Crawfordsburn does private scans. As far as I know you can pay for just a scan and you don't have to be a patient of his. The website says it costs £275.

One reasons is there was people were suing the hospitals if they told the wrong sex and that may be the reason of not saying what they think it was. Also I think they are more reluctant to give them out for the first child.0

The Ulster state that they will not disclose the sex but I did ask the lady at the 20 week scan if she could tell. I explained I didn't actually want to know but I'd had a good look during the scan and I couldn't see a thing. I got the impression if asked nicely that she would have told us.
That said, I had weekly scans in my last trimester due to a very active baby and the couple of times we did want to find out the sex, baby was very coy and kept its legs crossed. The very week we decided to wait and see, it was obvious to the doctor what the sex was and she asked if we wanted to know!
I think if you play it nicely there's always a chance that you could get the doctor on a good day and they'll tell you the sex if they can see the appropriate "bits". I'd hold off from paying privately until you've at least tried to sweet talk the Mater into revealing all. Your daughter might just save the guts of £300 and that's very MSE :money:0 -
Malone Clinic on the Malone Rd do a half hour scan with DVD and printouts for about £200.0

Fiancee just had private Gender scan at hillsborough clinic. It was only £90 and was done by a nurse who actually works in Lagan valley. Well worth it as we were almost 100% sure we were having a girl . Highly reccommend them as Lagan valley hospital would not tell us0

Lagan Valley policy is not to disclose but we were asked half a dozen times if we wanted to know (we had several more scans as baby was little)... we were even asked at 38 weeks lol
Sorry OP - I don't know, the private clinic sounds like the best bet0 -
I just had my 20 week scan at the mater, and the lady was really nice. I chatted to her, and mentioned that it was my 2nd child. She asked if I wanted to know what I was having, but I said I would rather have a surprise!
I think she might have told me if I really would have wanted to know. She did a really good scan, and really took her time. She showed me all the different body part like the stomach, bladder etc (some of which I couldn't even make out!) This was the best scan I have had, and we even watched the baby kicking its foot back at us as it didn't like the scanner poking about!!
Really great experience!:j0 -
Enniskillen say they wont tell you but i asked and they did
Saying that i do know 3 people who were told they were having boys and ended up having girls. So i only bought a couple of blue things. Thankfully they were right.0 -
So out of the people who have been offered the information about the sex of the baby even though the hospital doesn't advocate it.....
which of you where having baby no. 1?
which of you were having subsequent babies?
The reason I say this is because it appears that there is an increased chance of being told if it is NOT the first baby. In that case the private scan is more of a likely option for first pregnancies.0
