297L Tax Code

My husband is retired and in receipt of an occupational pension, and also claims carer's allowance.

When he realised, some 13 months after his claim began, that the carer's allowance was taxable, he rang HMRC and told them.

They were fine about it and said they'd just alter his tax code to recover the underpayment.

He was put on the 297L code and I'm wondering if it is the correct code.

He's 60, his occupational pension is about 15K a year and the carer's allowance is about £55 a week.

He has no other income or job.

Thanks.

    well
if he receives 55 per week then thats 55 x 52 = 2860 per annum

so this tax year his tax allowance is 7475 which will be reduced by the untaxed income so his tax allowance will be 7475-2860 = 4615
so his code should be 461L

however maybe he is repaying some tax from last year

he should have recived a notice of coding explaining the figures

Thanks Clapton. He is repaying a bit of tax in respect of the carer's allowance, as he was getting it for 13 months before realising it was taxable. So he owed the tax on that for the 13 month period.

Does it look pretty much like the code is correct then?
