Why has sterling dropped by 25% against such a ailing currency?

because there's power in a union.

one thing that baffles me is how one of my favourite countries (montenegro) gets away with using the euro as their national currency without actually being in the eurozone.

how that will actually work with their membership (when candidate countries have to be subject to erm prior to euro entry) i'm not sure. maybe because they have a small population no one cares.

you can get 5 percent on savings over there at the moment though.....

Used to be the deutschmark until 2002.

Had to send the valid notes back to Germany and obtain Euro's instead.

You can use anything you like as your national currency, even a currency someone else prints. Lots of places use the US Dollar as their currency (ie not alongside a local one) including BVI and El Salvador. In other places, the US Dollar is an officially accepted currency (eg you can use it to pay your taxes). Zimbabwe will take several different currencies as tax including the US Dollar, Pound Sterling and the Euro.

clearly. seems a little odd though. surely that can destabilise / impact the value of your currency?

with montenegro i believe they were using the deutsche mark but when germany ditched it they followed suit.

Well the ECB are the only people that can print Euros so Montenegro couldn't create an inflationary problem.

TBH there's not a lot you can do about it. All sorts of things get used as currency from metal to paper to shells, cigarettes, chewing gum and so on.

In London there was a shortage of low denomination coins for a time (C18th perhaps????) and so shops and pubs used to strike their own copper coins. They would often be accepted around the neighbourhood so a baker would accept a coin from the local pub for example. You can pick them up pretty cheaply from numismatic shops and at auction if you're not too fussy about condition.

Totnes in Devon has the green pound. A way of keeping money in the local economy.

    .

but if people started hoarding euros there wouldn't that have some impact - along with just the general taxation policies etc of the country? it's not just the ability to print that impacts on value is it?

no. looks mad. but not quite possibly no more mad than the banking system. like religion you only need enough believers / adherents to make the system function.
