Tax refund query

in Cutting tax
This is probably a very basic question, but....son number 1 works supply type work where salary varies every month, but overall stays below personal allowance. No probs last year, but this month (end of May), salary higher, so has been taxed. Highly unlikely to happen again, and should stay below threshold all year.
So question is....does he have to claim refund? Or will it automatically get refunded next month when tax office may notice he doesn't earn much? Or does he have to wait until end of year and then they refund him?
Same has happened to son number 2 with new Saturday job, first month has been taxed (only gets £5,80 an hour!!).
Both their codes are 747, so thats right, but both want refund now - how do we go about it?
Thanks....

Hi
As long as his tax code is 747l cumulative then it should even out next month or over the coming months (depending on his pay). No need to wait until end of year and his employer should work this out automatically for him. If his code is 747l non cumulative (wk1/mth1) then it won't be automatic and he should ring the tax office to check it. Usually this early in the tax year it will more than like be a cumulative code.
Hope this helps!0 -
Hi, thanks for that...his code is 747L/0...i'm not sure whether this means its cumulative or not, I haven't heard this term before with tax. So if his pay next month is low, you reckon they will refund the tax he's paid in month 1?0

It's only the tax that will be refunded using a cumulative tax code. He won't get any refund of NIC as that's worked out on a "per pay day" basis, not annual basis.0
